Canine Progesterone Testing
If you are planning to breed, the best time to take your girl to choose a stud is two days after she ovulates. This is where progesterone testing is especially useful to predict ovulation. At the clinic we offer canine progesterone testing in Preston for all breeds of dogs. However, if you are further afield or perhaps you have a nervous dog? Our clinicians are happy to travel to you, to carry out the test in the comfort of your own home. We offer this service both mobile and at our clinic.
What is Canine Progesterone Testing?
Progesterone testing is a series of blood tests which most accurately determines optimum timing for breeding. This test is best combined with behaviour observation of both parents. Another option is vaginal cytology to pinpoint ovulation.
It is more important to carry out progesterone testing if
- The bitch or dog is travelling a long distance to breed.
- If the breeding requires fresh chilled or fresh semen.
- Either parent has a history of being difficult to breed.

Why it is Important?
The most common cause of infertility in a bitch is mistimed mating. As a breeder you will understand that the canine reproductive system is unique and complex. Therefore, very few understand the cycle until it is on a graph for them. These tests will give you an insight into what is going on with your bitch and predict the best time to breed. Furthermore, the tests ensure you receive the best possible size litter.
How it works
We recommend that you book your initial consultation approximately eight days after the heat cycle begins. The earlier, the better as some bitches can ovulate as soon as this in their estrous cycle. It is unlikely that we will be able to determine ovulation from a single test. In contrast to the early starters, we mention above, some bitches can ovulate up to 30 days after. Therefore, may require up to three or four tests.
On the Day
The blood test is a quick procedure and takes less than 5 minutes. During this time our clinician will try to keep your dog as comfortable and stress-free as possible. We take blood from the vein in the dogs’ front leg and test the plasma. The analysis takes a further 20 minutes, then we can provide you with the results.
